About NSDA and NSP
The National Skills Development Authority (NSDA) is the central government body in Bangladesh responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and improving the country’s skills development system. It operates under the Government of Bangladesh and works to ensure that training and education programs produce a skilled workforce capable of meeting both national and international labor market demands.
NSDA was established to bring greater coordination and quality assurance to the skills development sector. Before its establishment, many training programs in Bangladesh were run by different ministries, NGOs, and private organizations with limited coordination. The creation of NSDA helped unify these efforts under a common framework, ensuring that skills training aligns with industry requirements and global standards.
One of the key responsibilities of NSDA is implementing the National Skills Development Policy 2011 (NSDP). This policy focuses on developing a demand-driven skills training system, improving training quality, and expanding access to skills development opportunities for youth, women, and disadvantaged communities. NSDA also supports competency-based training and assessment systems to ensure that trainees gain practical skills relevant to the job market.
NSDA works closely with government ministries, private sector organizations, training providers, and international development partners. It develops national standards for training programs, accredits training institutions, and promotes partnerships between industry and training centers. By doing so, NSDA aims to reduce unemployment, increase productivity, and support Bangladesh’s economic growth.
Another important initiative linked to skills development in Bangladesh is the National Service Program (NSP). The National Service Program was introduced by the Government of Bangladesh to address youth unemployment and provide young graduates with practical work experience. Through this program, educated but unemployed youth are given opportunities to develop their professional skills while contributing to community development.
The National Service Program typically targets young graduates and diploma holders between certain age groups who are seeking employment opportunities. Participants receive short-term training in areas such as computer skills, communication, and professional development before being placed in government offices, local institutions, or community projects. During their placement, participants receive a monthly allowance and gain valuable work experience that improves their employability.
NSP also focuses on social development and public service. Participants often assist in education programs, local administration activities, health awareness campaigns, and other community initiatives. This helps improve local services while giving young people the chance to develop leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills.
Both NSDA and NSP play significant roles in strengthening Bangladesh’s human resource development. While NSDA focuses on building a strong national skills framework and improving training quality, NSP focuses on providing practical work opportunities for unemployed youth. Together, these initiatives contribute to building a skilled, productive, and competitive workforce that supports the country’s long-term development goals.
